The Magic Johnson Records/MCA soundtrack to the forthcoming Fox Searchlight film "Brown Sugar" is packed with sweet contributions from hip-hop/R&B luminaries, including Mos Def, Erykah Badu, Common, Angie Stone, Jill Scott, the Roots, Mary J. Blige, and Faith Evans. The album is due Sept. 24. The film -- the story of two friends (Taye Diggs and Sanaa Lathan) making it big in the music industry -- arrives Oct. 11 in U.S. theaters.

All the music on the soundtrack, which boasts three songs dubbed "Brown Sugar" -- is to be featured in the film, where the music-industry setting also allows for cameo appearances by artists such as Method Man, Doug E. Fresh, Slick Rick, Dana Dane, Common, and the Roots. Rapper/actors Queen Latifah and Mos Def also play parts in the film.

Def contributes four songs to the soundtrack, "Brown Sugar (Fine)," "Breakdown," "Brown Sugar (Raw)" with his Black Star cohort Talib Kweli, as well as "Brown Sugar (Super Fine)" featuring Evans. Other key cuts include the "7 Minutes of Madness" remix of Eric B. & Rakim's classic "Paid in Full," and Blackalicious' "It's Going Down," featuring Lateef The Truth Speaker and KeKe Wyatt. Basketball legend Earvin "Magic" Johnson served as executive producer of both the film and the accompanying album.

"I think it's a pretty accurate portrayal of the current state of hip-hop," Diggs recently told Billboard. "I grew up with hip-hop, and I always saw it as music to enjoy. I never realized until I did this film that there are people who live and breathe hip-hop and take it so seriously that they feel they're nothing without [it]."
