Veteran Chicago bluesman Buddy Guy has tapped T-Model Ford as the opening act for a string of East Coast tour dates. Ford joins Guy for a pair of shows in New York the first week in September, and continues with him until Sept. 16 in Athens, Ga.
Guy, whose 2001 release "Sweet Tea" (Zomba/Silvertone) featured a cover of Ford's "Look What All You Got," will continue to tour, as usual, throughout much of the year. Updates can be found on his official Web site. "Sweat Tea" debuted at No. 1 on Billboard's Top Blues Albums tally last June.
On Sept. 10, Ford will release "Bad Man," his fourth album for Fat Possum. The set was produced by Jim Dickinson (Screamin' Jay Hawkins, Big Star), and finds Ford working with Widespread Panic's Jojo Hermann, among others. Ford, as well known for the fact that he stabbed a man to death when he was 18 as he is for his music, also recorded with longtime drummer Spam.
Says Dickinson of the pair, "T-Model Ford and Spam are in the moment like few other blues artists ... [Ford] pays tribute to the greats -- Muddy, Hooker, Lightnin' and Wolf -- but beyond pure tradition he has been influenced by what he hears in the chaos of today, as if the great Jimmy Reed were playing with Ornette Coleman."
After touring with Guy, Ford is slated to hit the road with Johnny Winter.
