The late Frank Zappa is revered as an absurdist genius who continually pushed the limits of conventional music, but wading into his vast body of work can be daunting for new listeners. With that in mind, Rykodisc has initiated a new compilation series, "Zappa Picks," where celebrity fans of the artist's work handpick favorite tracks from his catalog.

The first two single-disc sets in the series were compiled by Phish drummer Jon Fishman and Primus guitarist Larry LaLonde, and are due Oct. 15 from the label. Each takes a different approach to Zappa's output and the 16- and 19-song collections share just two tracks -- "Dog Breath," from 1972's "Just Another Band From L.A.," and "Sofa No. 2" from 1975's "One Size Fits All."

"It is safe to say that the work of Frank Zappa, his music primarily, but also his humor, politics, social commentary... all of it... has not just been a fundamental influence on me, but is actually more like part of my metabolism," Fishman said in a statement.

"I find this music so wonderful that no matter what I'm listening to, or just finding out about, Frank's music is always on my personal play list, and I never get tired of it. How could you?" added LaLonde.
