Shakira, Diego Torres, and Juanes lead the nominations for the inaugural MTV Video Music Awards Latin America, set for Oct. 24 at the Jackie Gleason Theater in Miami Beach. Each earned five nods, including artist of the year and video of the year. La Ley, Mexican band Kinky, and pop star Paulina Rubio earned four nominations each. A number of artists tallied three nods, including Sanz, Enrique Iglesias, Catupecu Machu, and Babasonicos.
Torres' other nominations include best artist (Southeast), best pop artist, and best male artist. Juanes, also nominated in the latter category, earned nods for best rock artist and best artist (North). Pop singer Shakira is up for best artist (North), best pop artist, and best female artist.
Also recognized in the artist of the year category are Spain's Alejandro Sanz and Chilean rock band La Ley. Video of the year nominees are Iglesias' "Hero," Juanes' "A Dios Le Pido," Rubio's "Si Tu Te Vas," Shakira's "Suerte," and Torres' "Color Esperanza."
Thus far, Shakira and Maná are slated to perform during the ceremony, as is System Of A Down. The L.A.-bred metal band of Armenian descent is recognized in the best new international artist and best international rock artist categories. Also nominated in the latter category are Coldplay, Linkin Park, No Doubt, and Red Hot Chili Peppers.
Nominees were selected by an academy of industry representatives and MTV viewers. Winners will be chosen by fans who cast their votes at MTV Latin America's Web site. The awards will be hosted by Argentine TV and radio personality Mario Pergolini and Mexican actor Diego Luna ("Y Tu Mamá También").
