Chicago underground rock outfit the Sea & Cake has pushed back the release of its sixth Thrill Jockey album, "One Bedroom," from Oct. 8 to early next year. The move was made to allow the label to focus its efforts on a host of recent and upcoming releases from Radian, Sue Garner, Japanese electronic artist Nobukazu Takemura, Freakwater's Catherine Irwin, and producer John Parish. The 10-track "One Bedroom" is the follow-up to 2000's "Oui," which debuted at No. 24 on Billboard's Heatseekers chart.
The Sea & Cake were in New York this weekend to perform as part of the Thrill Jockey's 10th anniversary shows, and unveiled several new songs Saturday at the Bowery Ballroom. "We went back and listened to some of the old records and I was really belting it out back then, so I'd say my singing is more upfront on this one," vocalist Sam Prekop tells Billboard.com. "One song is a direct result of my home solo recording; it's fairly unadorned."
Echoing drummer John McEntire's description of "One Bedroom" as "a bit more constructed" than "Oui," Prekop says the new set has more in common with 1997's heavily electronic "The Fawn." Such tracks as "Hotel Tell" and "Le Baron" are driven by electronics and keyboards, while the band adds its typically breezy touch to a cover of David Bowie's "Sound + Vision," featuring vocals by the Aluminum Group's Frank and John Navin.
Sea & Cake are planning a North American tour in November and December, but beforehand, the group has a handful of European dates on tap for this month with Tortoise and other Thrill Jockey acts.
Here are the Sea & Cake's tour dates:
Sept. 15: London (Ocean Club)
Sept. 16: Lisbon, Portugal (Paradise Garage)
Sept. 18: Rome (Enzimi Festival)
Sept. 21: Paris (Elysee Montmarte)
Sept. 22: Brussels (Le Nuits De Botanique)
Sept. 23: Copenhagen (Amager Bio)
Sept. 24: Berlin (Metropol)
