As tipped here in May, crooners Tony Bennett and k.d. lang are readying an album of duets for a Nov. 5 release. "A Wonderful World" (RPM/Columbia) was produced by T Bone Burnett and comprises songs associated with Louis Armstrong.
"I feel incredibly honored to have the opportunity to be brought into the world of Louis Armstrong by Tony Bennett. The chance to study and record this music with Tony is a tremendous thrill for me as an artist," said lang, whose tour with Bennett in summer 2001 inspired the sessions for "A Wonderful World." The album features tunes such as "La Vie En Rose," "If We Never Meet Again," "I'm Confessin' (That I Love You)," and the almost-title track, Armstrong's signature "What a Wonderful World."
Bennett and lang are accompanied on the album by the former's touring quartet and a 50-piece orchestra. The set was recorded at Englewood, N.J.'s Bennett Studios, which is owned and run by Bennett's son, Dae Bennett. The facility has a fiber-optic connection to the nearby 1,200-seat John Harms Theater, so the musicians were able to perform on an actual stage as part of the recording process.
Bennett summed up the experience in a statement: "k.d. and I are both live performers first and we loved the idea of recording in what is a very natural setting for us -- a beautiful and acoustically sound theatre like the John Harms. It provided a real sense of drama and spontaneity that can be hard to recreate in a typical recording studio."
Tonight (Sept. 19), Bennett and lang will perform at New York's Carnegie Hall, where Bennett made history in 1962 with the Hall's first solo pop performance. A PBS special, "The Wonderful World of Tony Bennett: Live From San Francisco," is also in the works and will be taped later this month for December airing.
