Wherefore art thou, Lil' Romeo? Where else but in the eponymously titled "Lil' Romeo and Lil' Juliet," an MGM film starring rapper Lil' Romeo that Artists Production Group's Mark Canton will produce with Lil' Romeo's father, rap mogul Master P. The teenage/hip-hop take on Shakespeare's classic "Romeo and Juliet" will express the violence of the original tale through music and dance with a script written by Dallas Jackson.
A nationwide search will soon begin to find Lil' Juliet for the multiethnic and multicultural project. No director is yet attached.
"I'm extremely excited about this film," Canton said. "The idea behind the production is fantastic. 'Romeo and Juliet' is a timeless story that deserves to be told for a new generation. It's thrilling to develop it from this new angle using an entirely fresh, invigorating voice."
Added Master P., "Romeo and I are excited about working with MGM and Mark Canton. We look forward to the potential of this movie."
Lil' Romeo is currently in production on Universal Pictures' "Honey" and recently wrapped shooting an untitled pilot for Nickelodeon described as a modern take on "The Partridge Family."
The 13-year-old rapper's self-titled recording debut, featuring the single "My Baby," earned him Billboard Music Awards for rap artist of the year and rap single of the year last year. His sophomore album, "Game Time," will be released Nov. 17 on No Limit Records, a label founded and owned by Master P.
