Ed Sheeran was the most played artist in the U.K. last year while Mark Ronson’s "Uptown Funk" was the market's most ubiquitous hit, according to a new study which measures airplay across radio and TV and public performance.

Sheeran topped the PPL’s Most Played Artist of the Year chart for 2015, up from No. 3 the previous year, thanks largely to the popularity of his hits "Thinking Out Loud," "Photograph" and "Bloodstream" (with Rudimental).

The singer-songwriter’s good friend Taylor Swift came in at No. 2, Olly Murs locked down No. 3, while homegrown acts Take That and Ellie Goulding appeared at No. 4 and No. 5, respectively .

Adele, the reigning IFPI Global Recording Artist of 2015, snuck into the PPL’s list at No. 20, behind the likes of Rihanna, Queen, Michael Jackson and the most played artist from 2014, Katy Perry. Adele’s lowly ranking in the new list, however, is a reflection of the release late in the year of 25 and its hugely successful lead single, "Hello." The Brit’s impact is likely to be seen in the People’s Charts in 2016, the PPL notes.

The crown for Most Played Pop Track of the Year goes to "Uptown Funk," by Mark Ronson feat. Bruno Mars. The all-conquering retro hit had already topped the Official Top 40 Biggest Songs of 2015, a year-end survey published by the Official Charts Company.

The PPL People’s Charts are released each year at the company’s AGM, which this year took place on June 2 in central London. The results are aggregated using PPL’s exclusive U.K. airplay data from radio stations and TV channels and from public performance across businesses such as pubs, clubs and gyms.

Collections at the London-based, not-for-profit organization grew to £197 million ($288 million) in 2015, an increase of 5 percent on the previous year.
