This album was recorded before an audience at Master Control Studio in Burbank, Calif. Carrington is one of the great jazz prodigies of the last quarter-century-a drummer who received a full scholarship to the Berklee College of Music at age 11. She's gigged with many jazz greats and, with Jazz Is a Spirit, shows that she's also an adept composer. Most of the tunes of the album are Carrington originals, and the music is firmly in the post-bop scene. She benefits enormously from the presence of such players as Herbie Hancock, Wallace Roney, Terence Blanchard, Keith Eubanks, and Munyungo Jackson, but the charts and the inspiration are hers. At 14 tracks there's plenty of tempting music here, but do note Carrington originals "Journey of Now" and "Lost Star" and the fine rendition of Wayne Shorter's "Witch Hunt."-PVV
