Rapper/actor Will Smith is in negotiations to star in 20th Century Fox's "I, Robot," a big-screen adaptation of Isaac Asimov's classic science fiction book series. Alex Proyas ("Dark City") will direct the film, production for which is scheduled to begin in the spring.

Adapted by Jeff Vintar, "Robot" revolves around a society in which robots function alongside human beings in a servile capacity and are both harmless and helpful. The story line centers on a technophobic police officer (Smith) who is called in to investigate a murder that he believes was committed by a robot and uncovers a giant conspiracy.

"It's an indelible sci-fi classic that can be forged into something that is a sci-fi epic," 20th Century Fox president Hutch Parker said. "It's not often that you find a classic that has not been done before, pair it with a dynamic, edgy film-maker and then cap it off with the addition of a superstar who is also an actor who can truly do it all."

Smith, who recently starred in "Men in Black II," is currently shooting another sequel, Columbia Pictures' "Bad Boys 2." Earlier this week, Columbia released Smith's "Greatest Hits" album, a 15-track set that surveys his 15-year recording career, both as a solo artist and with partner DJ Jazzy Jeff.
