The Red Hot Chili Peppers will on Dec. 20 headline the Chevy Truck U.S. Snowboard Grand Prix in Park City, Utah. The special outdoor concert appearance -- dubbed "Peppers and Pipes" -- will be held at Park City Mountain Resort and broadcast nationally on NBC the following evening at 10 p.m. ET.

With the Chili Peppers' U.S. tour in support of "By the Way" (Warner Bros.) slated for the spring and summer, the gig is one of just three North American appearances this winter. The group -- having walked away with both the best live act and best hard rock act at the MTV Europe Music Awards in Barcelona -- also has a pair of dates booked Dec. 30-31 at the Hard Rock Hotel in Las Vegas.

The band wraps a visit to the Far East tomorrow (Dec. 10) with a gig at the Impact Arena in Bangkok, Thailand. The Peppers plan to launch the next leg of their world tour Jan. 24 at the Atlantic Pavilion in Lisbon, Portugal.

In related news, guitarist John Frusciante has been working on his fourth solo album in between touring obligations and will resume recording during the band's December/January holiday break. According to the Chili Peppers' official web site, the as-yet-untitled project will feature contributions from bandmate Chad Smith and Josh Klinghoffer of Los Angeles rock act the Bicycle Thief.
