The six-week jaunt is due to kick off Jan. 23 at the group's hometown venue Tipitina's, run through 17 scattered dates in the U.S., and then return to New Orleans for a Mardi Gras show and closing gig March 3 at Tipitina's.
The tour, the successor to 2002's Freezestyle winter tour, will include a three-night run in Colorado supported by Medeski, Martin, & Wood. Two of those nights -- Feb. 14 and 15 at Denver's Fillmore Theatre -- will also feature the turntablism of DJ Z-Trip. The Mardi Gras show will be a full-day music festival hosted by Galactic, with supporting artists to be announced.
Galactic -- which comprises bassist Robert Mercurio, organ player Rich Vogel, drummer Stanton Moore, guitarist Jeff Raines, saxophonist Ben Ellman, and singer Theryl DeClouet -- has a short run of California New Year's shows coming up, climaxing in its annual Dec. 31 gig at San Francisco's Warfield Theatre.
The group is also working up material for a new album. Its most recent set, the Volcano live album "We Love 'Em Tonight (Live at Tipitina's)" debuted at No. 3 on Billboard's Top Contemporary Jazz Albums chart in Sept. 2001.
