Keith Caulfield fields readers' questions about 30 Seconds To Mars, Hoku, and Kelly Clarkson.

LOVIN' LETO

Keith,

I love Jared Leto. His band 30 Seconds To Mars released an album this past summer. I went to their show this fall here in Ottawa, and I think they're really talented. Leto could really sing and I hope everyone gets to see them perform and judge for themselves! Can you please tell me how many copies they've sold in the U.S.?

Shetaye

Hello,

30 Seconds To Mars' self-titled debut has sold 64,000 copies in the U.S. since its August 2002 release, according to Nielsen SoundScan. The Immortal/Virgin set debuted at No. 1 on Billboard's Heatseekers chart on Sept. 14. On the Mainstream Rock Tracks chart, the band peaked at No. 31 with "Capricorn [A Brand New Name]" on Oct. 5.

DO YOU HOKU?

Keith,

I'm wondering how well Hoku's debut album sold and how her singles have fared, and also whether she has any plans for a follow-up or if she even still has a record contract.

Thanks so much, and I love reading your column each week!

Bryan

Hello Bryan,

Hoku's debut self-titled album reached No. 151 on The Billboard 200 and No. 8 on Heatseekers back in 2002. The Geffen/Interscope album, which has sold 235,000 copies in the U.S., according to Nielsen SoundScan, contained the No. 27 Hot 100 hit "Another Dumb Blonde." The single was released commercially, and went on to move 566,000 units.

Hoku also appeared on the 2001 "Legally Blonde" soundtrack singing the lead cut, "Perfect Day."

There is no word on if Hoku will release any new material soon.

I WANT MY 'IDOL'!

Keith,

Can you please tell me when Kelly Clarkson's new single is coming out? I heard her CD is being released in the beginning of March, so I would assume that a single would be released soon. Any information you have about her CD would be great as well!

Thanks,

Lynda Shulman

Hello,

Well, last we checked, Kelly Clarkson's debut album didn't have a release date yet -- at least not one that has been announced to the media. There is no word on when the next single will arrive from the forthcoming RCA album either. Her first effort, "A Moment Like This," hit No. 1 on Billboard's Hot 100 and went on to become the biggest selling single of 2002.

In the meantime, "American Idol" will begin its second season on Fox later this month.
