A new Bob Dylan original song, "Cross the Green Mountain," will make its premiere today (Jan. 17) in streaming audio form on AOL Music's First Listen program. As previously reported, the song was recorded for the forthcoming Sony Classical soundtrack to the Civil War-themed film "Gods and Generals," due Feb. 4. The movie, starring Robert Duvall, Jeff Daniels, and Mira Sorvino, opens Feb. 21 in U.S. theaters.

"Cross the Green Mountain" will be exclusively available to AOL members for 24 hours starting at 12:01 a.m. ET today, via AOL Keyword: First Listen. Starting tomorrow at 6:01 a.m. ET, anyone will be able to access the song at Netscape Music's site, music.netscape.com.

"In this song, Dylan has in a sense returned to his roots as a folk-country balladeer -- the same roots that nourished the mountain men of western Virginia, the home of [General Stonewall] Jackson, and countless others who fought for both the Blue and the Gray," the film's director Ron Maxwell said last summer.

AOL will also include another cut from the soundtrack, Mary Fahl's "Going Home," on the First Listen page. The soundtrack is rounded out by songs from John Frizzell, Mark O'Connor, the Chieftains' Paddy Moloney, and Randy Edelman.
