Father-and-son rappers Master P and Lil' Romeo will star together in the urban family comedy "Uncle P," with video director Bernard Gourly making his feature film debut. Production is scheduled to begin later this month, with Master P putting up several million dollars of his own money to finance the project while still seeking a domestic distributor. Master P is the film's co-producer with its writer, Dallas Jackson.
"Uncle P" is described as an urban "Uncle Buck" meets "Mr. Mom." The project sees Master P essentially starring as himself, a multimillion-dollar businessman in New York known as P Miller (short for his real name, Percy Miller), who is also a famous rapper. When Miller's sister, a single mother living in suburban California, becomes ill, she asks her brother to come and take care of her three children.
Upon arrival, Miller finds himself out of his element as he becomes the children's caretaker and surrogate father. The more time he spends with them, he realizes there is more to life than his business, and he slowly begins to learn the importance of family. He also helps the kids with their own problems. Romeo plays the middle child, a mischievous 12-year-old who desperately needs a father figure in his life.
"With the success of films like 'Barbershop' and 'Drumline,' I felt it was time for Romeo and I to step into the family comedy genre and take it to the next level with one of the funniest scripts I ever read," Master P said.
Added Gourly: "I think it's a great opportunity to take an urban icon like Master P, who is generally regarded as a hard-core persona, and put him in a lighthearted, family environment."
"Uncle P" marks Jackson's third collaboration with Master P and Romeo. He wrote "Shorty," a feature film set up at Universal Pictures in which Romeo will star and Master P will produce with studio-based Marc Platt. He also wrote "Lil' Romeo and Lil' Juliet," an MGM film to star Romeo that Mark Canton will produce with Master P. Gourly previously directed such Romeo videos as "True Love," from his sophomore album, "Game Time."
Master P is the founded and owner of No Limit Records, which has grown into a brand that includes No Limit Clothing, No Limit Toys, PM Properties, the retail shoe chain Master Feet, and No Limit Films. As an actor, Master P has appeared in such films as "Gone in Sixty Seconds," "The Players Club," and "Undisputed." He recently wrapped shooting Revolution Studios' "Hollywood Homicide," while Romeo just wrapped shooting Universal Pictures' "Honey," opposite Jessica Alba.
