The event honors excellence in the radio industry, recognizing stations, programmers, music directors, syndicated shows, and independent promotion companies.
WTIC Hartford, Conn., earned three awards, more than any other station: secondary-market adult top-40 station, adult top-40 program/operations director (Steve Salhany), and adult top-40 assistant PD/music director (Jeanine Jersey). Country consultant Jaye Albright took home the award for country radio consultant/group PD of the year-marking the first time Rusty Walker has not won since the category was created in 1995.
Awards in radio categories were given in major and secondary market categories, with nominees determined by a panel of Billboard/Airplay Monitor editors and chart managers. Winners were chosen through a ballot published subscriber copies of the November 15 issue of Airplay Monitor and the November 23 issue of Billboard.
The inaugural Innovators Award was given to "Pure Dance" WYPM Miami. The honoree was chosen by the staffs of Billboard and Billboard/Airplay Monitors.
New to the proceedings were 14 awards based on the Billboard/Airplay Monitor airplay charts that were presented to labels whose promotional efforts resulted in the most cumulative spins compiled during the chart lives of their songs. Interscope emerged as the big winner, with label of the year honors in the mainstream top 40, modern rock, active rock, heritage rock, mainstream rock, modern AC, and triple-A formats. Other winners were the Island/Def Jam Music Group, J Records, Columbia Records, and Arista Nashville.
