Madonna has signed a deal with publisher Callaway Editions for a series of five illustrated children's books, to be distributed in the U.S. by Penguin Group (USA) and published in other English-language markets by Puffin. The first, "The English Roses," will be published and distributed worldwide in September.

Aimed toward audiences age six and under, each of the books will feature the drawings of a different renowned illustrator. Financial details of the deal were not disclosed, nor were themes or titles for the volumes.

The only previous venture into the literary world by the pop star-cum-actor was the 1992 book "Sex" (Warner Books), a risque collection of photographs featuring Madonna and numerous celebrities in various stages of undress.

As previously reported, Madonna's forthcoming Maverick/Warner Bros. studio album is slated for an April release. The as-yet-untitled set will be preceded by the first single, "American Life." The new album is the follow-up to her 2000 set "Music," which debuted at No. 1 on The Billboard 200 and has sold 2.86 million copies in the U.S., according to Nielsen SoundScan.
