Ozzfest organizers have announced that Canadian proto-thrash outfit Voivod, which now features ex-Metallica bassist Jason Newsted, will join that heavy metal caravan, appearing on the second stage before headliners Cradle Of Filth. Meanwhile, hard rock act TRUSTcompany has been bumped up to the main stage as openers for Chevelle, Disturbed, Marilyn Manson, Korn, and the touring festival's namesake, Ozzy Osbourne.

The move adds even more fuel to rumors in the metal community that Newsted will also play bass in Osbourne's band for the tour. Although Osbourne's publicist would not comment, a teaser of this possible announcement can be found on the official Ozzfest Web site in the following post:

"Ozzy Osbourne returns to headline Ozzfest 2003 to do what he loves best -- play rock'n'roll. The Prince of Darkness will hit the stage with bandmates Zakk Wylde, ___________, and Michael Bordin with a hard-hitting set of songs culled from his 33-year career as rock's purveyor of heavy metal." A post on Wylde's official Web site also promises that a "major announcement" is forthcoming regarding the bassist position in Osbourne's band.

If the speculation does bear out to be true, Newsted will in effect be switching roles with his replacement in Metallica, Robert Trujillo. Trujillo, formerly of Suicidal Tendencies and Infectious Grooves, played with Ozzy from 1999 until officially joining Metallica last week.
