Koch Entertainment will on May 6 release the soundtrack to "Only the Strong Survive," a "musical celebration of soul" from documentary filmmakers DA Pennebaker and Chris Hegedus. The 13-track collection features some of the icons of soul music, including Isaac Hayes, Wilson Pickett, Rufus Thomas, and Jerry "The Iceman" Butler, the man responsible for the song from which the film takes its title.

Performance footage in the Miramax film comes from a concert staged by Pennebaker ("Don't Look Back," "Monterey Pop") and Hegedus ("Startup.com") expressly for the film. The show reunited the likes of Pickett, Butler, and Thomas with former Supremes member Mary Wilson, the Chi-Lites, and Sam Moore of Sam & Dave. The filmmakers worked with journalist Roger Friedman to capture the stories of these artists who were part of the explosive soul scene of the 1960s and early '70s, and the impact it has had on their lives since.

Among the highlights of the soundtrack is Rufus Thomas' duet with daughter Carla Thomas on "Night Time Is the Right Time," which closes the film, shot prior to the latter's December 2001 death. Pickett and Moore contribute a pair of classics in "Midnight Hour" and "Soul Man," respectively.

"Only the Strong Survive" is due to open May 2 in limited release in the U.S.
