Eric Clapton, Jerry Lee Lewis, Norah Jones, and Sheryl Crow are among the stars who will pay a 70th birthday tribute to Willie Nelson April 9 in New York. Also on board are Ray Charles, Kenny Chesney, Merle Haggard, Toby Keith, Kris Kristofferson, Lyle Lovett, Shelby Lynne, Ray Price, Leon Russell, Shania Twain, ZZ Top, and, as first reported here, John Mellencamp. Nelson turns 70 on April 30.
Dubbed "Willie Nelson and Friends: Live and Kickin'," the event will be staged at New York's Beacon Theater and taped for an edited two-hour broadcast on the U.S. Memorial Day holiday (May 26) at 9 p.m. ET on USA Network. The cable outlet is also planning encore broadcasts at 11:00 p.m. ET that same night, May 31 at 2 a.m. ET, and June 1 at 9 a.m. ET.
Tickets for the show go on sale Friday (March 28) at the Beacon Theater box office and select local Ticketmaster outlets and phone sales numbers (212-307-7171, 201-507-8900, 631-888-9000, 845-454-3388, and 212-307-7200).
This is the second such celebration of Nelson's contributions to music. Last year Crow, Price, and Jones all participated in "Willie Nelson & Friends: Stars & Guitars" at Nashville's Ryman Auditorium. Also broadcast on USA Network, that event saw performances by matchbox twenty's Rob Thomas, the Dixie Chicks, Emmylou Harris, Keith Richards, Jon Bon Jovi, and Brian McKnight, among others. Nelson's label, Lost Highway, released a live document of the concert in November.
