Phish Hooks Next Four Live Releases
Phish has confirmed the next four releases in its ongoing Live Phish series through Elektra, due May 20. The shows for this batch -- 7/15/98 Portland, Ore.; 5/7/94 Dallas; 7/12/91 Keene, N.H.; and 12/Phish has confirmed the next four releases in its ongoing Live Phish series through Elektra, due May 20. The shows for this batch -- 7/15/98 Portland, Ore.; 5/7/94 Dallas; 7/12/91 Keene, N.H.; and 12/29/94 Providence, R.I. -- were chosen by bassist Mike Gordon, who employed an exhaustive process of reviewing his notes from more than a thousand possible candidates. Sixteen prior Live Phish releases have sold a combined 579,000 copies in the U.S., according to Nielsen SoundScan.
"I created a 50-page document for the Phish office which gave all of my notes on favorite gigs and some gigs that I hated," Gordon told Billboard.com last December. "Sometimes in my journal I write with a big asterisk, 'get the tape!' Those are the ones I feel people should consider. Since it is so much spontaneity and improvisation that we do, there end up being some real special moments."
The Portland, Dallas, and Providence shows encompass three discs. The Portland show is augmented with filler tracks from 7/29/98 Maryland Heights, Mo., while the Dallas show (highlighted by a cover of the Breeders' "Cannonball") features bonus tracks from 1/22/94 Columbia, Mo. The Keene, N.H., show is notable for not only for its mammoth, 28-song setlist but the presence of the three-piece Giant Country Horns. Group members Dave Grippo and Russell Remington are currently a part of Phish guitarist Trey Anastasio's solo band.
Fans who pre-order all four upcoming Live Phish albums through the band's official Web site are eligible to win a pair of tickets to any show in the Vermont quartet's summer tour. As previously reported, the jaunt will culminate Aug. 2-3 with It, a blowout Phish event to be held on the Loring Air Force Base in Limestone, Maine.
