Retro-styled ballads and swing/lounge music set the musical tone for the "Down With Love" soundtrack, due May 13 on Reprise Records. Canadian crooner Michael Buble features prominently on the soundtrack with three songs: "Down With Love" (a duet with Holly Palmer), "For Once in My Life," and "Kissing a Fool."
The 20th Century Fox comedy "Down With Love" is set in the early 1960s and pays tribute to the romantic comedies of the era. Renee Zellweger plays feminist writer Barbara Novak, who becomes romantically involved with Ewan McGregor's womanizing journalist, Catcher Block.
"When I first read the script for the movie I immediately loved it," Buble tells Billboard.com. "It's flattering that people thought my music would be right for this film. I'm very proud to have worked with the film's director, Peyton Reed, and everyone else involved. I'm in great company."
The soundtrack also features a McGregor/Zellweger duet, "Here's to Love," performed in the grand style of a classic theater show tune. The actors are no strangers to singing songs for their movies: McGregor previously displayed his vocal talent in "Moulin Rouge" and Zellweger made her professional singing debut in "Chicago," which earned her an Oscar nomination.
Other soundtrack highlights include two versions of the classic ballad "Fly Me to the Moon," one by the late Frank Sinatra and the other by Astrud Gilberto. "Down With Love" film composer Marc Shaiman wrote the instrumental tracks that appear on the album. Vocalist Esthero -- previously a Sony Music recording artist now signed to Reprise -- resurfaces with the carefree pop song "Everyday Is a Holiday."
"Down With Love" will have its world premiere May 6 at the Tribeca Film Festival in New York, and is set to open May 16 in U.S. theaters.
