Former Pavement frontman Stephen Malkmus and his band the Jicks will open the first leg of Radiohead's upcoming North American tour. The initial portion of the trek will run Aug. 12-Sept. 5, according to Malkmus' official Web site, although a full announcement is not expected for another two weeks. It is not known who will support Radiohead on the tour's second leg, running from late September through mid-October.

"Those boys know how to cook on stage so it should be a blast," Malkmus said. "And they are super popular. I haven't done any big gigs like that in the U.S. since Lollapalooza. Hope I've learned something. We'll be hitting Canada again as well as Cleveland, Salt Lake [City], [Washington] D.C., Chi-town area, and Denver. A lot more places I can't remember."

Malkmus is touring in support of his second post-Pavement solo album, "Pig Lib." Released in late March by Matador, the set bowed at No. 5 on Billboard's Top Independent Albums chart and No. 97 on The Billboard 200.

The only other date on Malkmus' summer itinerary is a previously announced July 18 appearance at the Celebrate Brooklyn festival in the borough's Prospect Park Bandshell.
