Directed by Nick Castle, the project goes into production Saturday (July 12) in Los Angeles with Nia Hill, D'Angela Steed and Martin producing. Will Smith and Jada Pinkett Smith are executive producing.
"Filler" will see Martin -- who also co-wrote the project with Mark Brown and Tisha Campbell-Martin -- star as Derrick, a struggling, unemployed man who is studying for the bar exam. To make ends meet, he works as a seat filler for various awards ceremonies.
While occupying the seat of a high-powered entertainment attorney, Derrick meets his dream girl, Jhnelle, played by Rowland, a superstar who is performing at the event. To Derrick's amazement, Jhnelle falls hard for him too. There is one problem: Jhnelle is under the mistaken impression that Derrick is a wealthy lawyer, not a lowly seat filler.
Rowland soon be seen in New Line Cinema's "Freddy vs. Jason," due out next month. Her debut solo album, "Simply Deep," was release in October by Columbia. The set debuted at No. 3 on Billboard's Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums chart and No. 12 on The Billboard 200.
