Kevin Shields, the mastermind behind critically acclaimed but long-dormant shoegazing rock group My Bloody Valentine, will release his first new music in more than a decade on the soundtrack for the forthcoming Sofia Coppola film "Lost in Translation."
Shields, who has been playing with Primal Scream for the past few years, last penned and released original music on My Bloody Valentine's 1991 classic, "Loveless" (Sire/Creation). The band signed with Island shortly after the release of that widely influential album, but years of sessions for a follow-up were aborted and the group dissolved in the mid-'90s.
Shields has made numerous appearances on record since then, working with the likes of Dinosaur Jr., Curve, Dot Allison and J. Mascis & the Fog. But on "Lost In Translation," he turns in four songs under his own name -- "City Girl," "Golf Course," "Are You Awake?" and "Ikebana."
My Bloody Valentine's previously released "Sometimes" also makes the cut on the soundtrack, alongside a new exclusive track by Air ("Alone in Kyoto"). Other featured tunes include previously released music by Phoenix, Death In Vegas, Squarepusher and the Jesus & Mary Chain. Jellyfish/Beck keyboardist Roger J. Manning Jr. teams with Redd Kross drummer Brian Reitzell for two new tracks, "Shibuya" and "On the Subway."
To be released to theaters in September on Focus Features, "Lost In Translation" examines close friendships against the backdrop of the city of Tokyo. Bill Murray, Scarlett Johansson and Giovanni Ribisi star.
