Teenage rapper Bow Wow will stage a free concert Wednesday (July 23) in New York's Bryant Park. The noontime event will be sponsored by HBO and will include an announcement of a donation to be made by Bow Wow to the not-for-profit Computers for Youth (CFY) program. The organization provides computers to children in New York's middle schools, as well as training, support and Internet access.
"Anyone who knows me knows how much time I spend on computers. I'm a computer addict," Bow Wow says in a statement. "Every young person deserves to have a computer in his or her home. It's cool that CFY will also make sure that they learn how to use them."
On Aug. 1, Bow Wow will launch a brief U.S. tour with Lumidee and Nivea. The run will kick off July 24 in Providence, R.I., and has shows scheduled through Aug. 15 in Indianapolis.
Bow Wow will release his next studio album, "Unleashed," Aug. 19 via So So Def/Columbia. The set will feature guest appearances by Jagged Edge, Amerie and fellow teenage rapper Mario. First single "Let's Get Down" featuring Baby is No. 18 on Billboard's Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Singles & Tracks chart and No. 55 on the Hot 100.
"Unleashed" is the follow up to 2001's "Doggy Bag," which debuted at No. 2 on Billboard's Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums chart and No. 11 on The Billboard 200. The album has sold 1.1 million copies in the U.S., according to Nielsen SoundScan.
Last month the rapper, whose real name is Shad Gregory Moss, launched his own clothing line, Shago. Geared towards teenage boys, the brand is available throughout the U.S. (stores carrying the line can be located via the Shago Web site).
In other news, Bow Wow recently wrapped production on the film "Johnson Family Vacation." Due out next year, the film also stars Cedric The Entertainer, Solange Knowles, Shannon Elizabeth, Vanessa Williams and Steve Harvey. Also due to premiere in 2004 is an as-yet-unnamed WB sitcom starring the rapper.
