Justin Timberlake, Beyoncé and Coldplay emerged as the top winners at the 2003 MTV Video Music Awards (VMAs), held tonight (Aug. 28) at New York's Radio City Music Hall. The artists tied with three awards each.
Timberlake's "Cry Me a River" took the prizes for best male video and best pop video, while his clip for "Rock Your Body" won best dance video. "Crazy In Love" from Beyoncé featuring Jay-Z won the awards for best R&B video, best female video and best choreography in a video. Coldplay's "The Scientist" received honors for best group video, breakthrough video and best direction in a video.
"Cry Me a River" and "Crazy in Love" were contenders for the Viewers' Choice award, but were defeated by Good Charlotte's clip for "Lifestyles of the Rich and Famous."
Missy "Misdemeanor" Elliott led the nominees with eight nods for her "Work It" video, which ultimately won two awards: best video of the year and best hip-hop video. 50 Cent's "In Da Club" received prizes for best rap video and best new artist in a video. Johnny Cash's "Hurt" -- one of the top contenders with six nominations -- won the award for best cinematography in a video.
AFI took home the MTV2 award for "Girl's Not Grey." Nominees in the category had their musical clips debut on MTV2; the winner was chosen via voting on MTV.com. Duran Duran, newly reunited with all of its original members, was presented with a lifetime achievement award by Kelly Osbourne and Avril Lavigne.
Comedian Chris Rock hosted the show, reprising a role he filled in 1997 and 1999. Artists who performed included a surprise show-opening appearance by Madonna with Britney Spears, Christina Aguilera and Elliott, 50 Cent, Beyoncé and Jay-Z, Mary J. Blige, Coldplay, Good Charlotte and Metallica. Aguilera also performed with Method Man and Jane's Addiction's Dave Navarro.
