Classic tracks from Led Zeppelin, the Who, the Doors and Cream lead the lineup for the "School of Rock" soundtrack, due Sept. 30 via Atlantic. As previously reported, the film stars Tenacious D's Jack Black as a substitute teacher who schools his pre-teen students in the ways of rock'n'roll. On the album, Black and the child actors perform the Mooney Suzuki-penned title track and a cover of AC/DC's "It's a Long Way to the Top (If You Wanna Rock'n'Roll)."

"School of Rock" was directed by Richard Linklater, whose 1993 film "Dazed and Confused" was titled after a Led Zeppelin song. Linklater was unable to get clearance to use the song in the film, but held out hope that Zeppelin would permit him to use a different track in "School of Rock." According to a source, a videotape of Black making a direct plea to Zeppelin's surviving members for the use of "Immigrant Song" was sent to the group, who eventually signed off on the idea.

"Heal Me, I'm Heartsick" was penned by former Shudder To Think frontman Craig Wedren, who also wrote the film's score. In the film, the song is performed by Black's character's former group, No Vacancy, in a "battle of the bands" sequence against Black and his new students.

"Using a rock score was a great choice on [Linklater's] part because, as you'll see when you watch the movie, it could easily have a typical comedy, and even at times family-movie style score; subverting that keeps the movie genuinely raw and inspiring," Wedren tells Billboard.com.

Other artists found on the soundtrack include the Black Keys, Stevie Nicks, the Darkness, the Ramones and Wylde Ratttz, a cover band featuring Sonic Youth's Thurston Moore and Steve Shelley, Mudhoney's Mark Arm, Gumball's Don Fleming, the Stooges' Ron Asheton and the Minutemen's Mike Watt. The group's rendition of the Stooges' "T.V. Eye" is different than the one previously released on the 1998 "Velvet Goldmine" soundtrack.
