Rykodisc has set a Sept. 23 release date for "Big Star Story," a new best-of collection celebrating the career of Memphis-based power-pop icons Big Star. The set includes a newly recorded song, "Hot Thing," featuring the reunited lineup led by original members Alex Chilton and Jody Stephens.

The bulk of the material on "Big Star Story" is culled from the group's first three studio albums, "No. 1 Record," "Radio City" and "Third/Sister Lovers." Six of its 18 tracks are taken from the latter, including the jaunty "O Dana" and the haunting, melancholy "Holocaust." One track, "I Am the Cosmos," originally appeared on the identically titled solo album by late Big Star co-frontman Chris Bell, who died in 1978 in a car accident.

Singer/guitarist Chilton and drummer Stephens reformed Big Star in 1993 for a one-off show at the University of Missouri, with Posies principals Jon Auer and Ken Stringfellow filling out the band. It is this lineup that recorded "Hot Thing."

Here is the track listing for "Big Star Story":
