The champion of Canadian Idol was decided last night (Sept. 16) in a two-hour finale broadcast nationally on CTV (Canadian Television). Ryan Malcolm, a 23-year-old waiter from Kingston, Ontario, defeated 20-year-old Gary Beals, a theater major from Nova Scotia. The two finalists were among 15,000 who participated in tryouts across the country.
The show, reportedly the most watched Canadian television program in history, had an average viewing audience of 2 million people. More than 3 million votes were cast for the two finalists. "American Idol" second season winner Ruben Studdard also performed on the show.
The winner receives a management deal, a recording contract with BMG Canada and the opportunity to record an album, which will be released by year's end. Malcolm's first single, "Something More," will be released Sept. 30.
