'North' By Northwest
"It's all original songs written at the piano. There are 11 songs and they are among the most direct I've ever written lyrically, and, musically, I hope they do something new," says Elvis Costello of his new Deutsche Grammophon album, "North."
In a further break from his usual methods, the artist only plays guitar on one track and is going in new directions in terms of his singing style. "I'm singing exclusively in my speaking register, everything in baritone range, with the exception of maybe four notes on the record that go above middle C," he reveals.
The first 100,000 copies of "North" will include a limited-edition DVD boasting live performance videos of the title track and the new song "Fallen." The DVD will also feature a video clip for the studio recording of "Still."
Costello performs today (Sept. 22) and Wednesday at New York's Town Hall, accompanied only by Attractions/Imposters keyboardist and frequent collaborator Steve Nieve.
