Courtney Love is embroiled in a bitter custody fight with her late husband's mother over the welfare of 11-year-old Frances Bean Cobain. According to the New York Daily News, Love and Wendy O'Connor, the mother of Love's late husband Kurt Cobain, got into an altercation after a Tuesday custody hearing in Los Angeles.

"Wendy went nuts," Love told the paper. "She shoved me, and I slapped her like a 4-year-old, though I've never slapped a 4-year-old." She added, "She was just screaming. I saw sheer hate. I think she realized that the paranoia power games were gonna stop."

Love is battling for custody of Frances Bean in the wake of her Oct. 2 arrest on drug charges. Eight days later, the child was reportedly picked up at school and placed in the care of her grandmother. The paper reports that Frances Bean will move in with a nanny and that Love has been granted regular visits.

Love's Virgin debut, "America's Sweetheart," will be released Feb. 10.
