In the spirit of the upcoming winter holidays, the Gap and Virgin Megastores have set plans to raise money for charities. The clothing retailer will launch a TV campaign that involves a multi-artist CD single, while the music chain has linked with MasterCard for a donation tied to consumer purchases.
Al Green, Melissa Etheridge, Kelly Rowland, Vanessa Carlton, Third Eye Blind's Stephan Jenkins, Ginuwine, Musiq, Heather Headley and Gavin DeGraw have each contributed to a recording of "Put a Little Love in Your Heart" for the Gap. The artists will be seen in a series of four 30-second television commercials featuring the song, as well as models Nastassja Kinski and Frankie Rayder and their families.
Beginning Dec. 1, a CD single of the song will be exclusively sold at all U.S. Gap stores. All profits from each $2 disc will be donated to the Boys & Girls Clubs of America. The Gap will also make a donation to a charity of each artist's choice.
Meanwhile, for each MasterCard purchase at North American Virgin Megastores between Nov. 24 and Dec. 31, the company will donate $1 to Music for All Seasons (MFAS). The initiative will result in a donation of as much as $50,000 to the charity, which provides live music to audiences at residential institutions, including homeless and battered women's shelters, hospitals and geriatric centers, halfway houses and juvenile detention centers.
Along with her fan meet-and-greet yesterday (Nov. 18) at New York's Times Square Virgin Megastore location, Britney Spears met with several children sponsored by MFAS and lent a hand in kicking off the partnership.
"This holiday season collaboration will change the lives of children in many institutions all year long," MFAS Executive Director Brian Dallow says.
