White Stripes frontman Jack White contributes five tracks to the "Cold Mountain" soundtrack, due this week from DMZ/Columbia. Among them are the traditional "Wayfaring Stranger" and "Christmas Time Will Soon Be Over," Howlin' Wolf's "Sittin' on Top of the World," the Ralph Stanley-popularized "Great High Mountain" and the original "Never Far Away."
White also has a small role in "Cold Mountain," a Civil War-era drama adapted from Charles Frazier's best-selling book and starring Nicole Kidman, Jude Law and White's real-life girlfriend, Renee Zellweger. The film opens Dec. 25 in U.S. theaters.
Alison Krauss voices two tunes, one penned by Sting ("You Will Be My Ain True Love") and the other by Elvis Costello ("The Scarlet Tide"). Other tracks on the set include Reeltime Travelers' "Like a Songbird That Has Fallen" and three songs featuring former Cordelia's Dad lead singer Tim Eriksen. Pianist Gabriel Yared backs Kidman (on vocals) on "Ada Plays."
