A caretaker at the Los Angeles home of Five For Fighting's John Ondrasik was in serious condition yesterday (July 29) after being stabbed 13 times by an intruder, authorities said.

No arrests had been made in what investigators were treating as a possible burglary that was disrupted, police Officer Sandra Escalante said. The musician was not in the San Fernando Valley house at the time of the attack.

The attacker entered Ondrasik's home Wednesday night while a caretaker couple was there. The intruder stabbed Carlos Canton, 43, before fleeing, Escalante said.

The intruder apparently got into the home through a dog door. "It is likely that the suspect had entered the residence while the people were gone and when they returned from walking the dog, they surprised him," Swanston said.

It may have been a random burglary, and Canton appears to have been stabbed "just to facilitate the burglar's escape," the detective said. The intruder may have been injured as well, because a blood trail was found outside the house.

Five For Fighting's latest album, "The Battle for Everything," debuted in February at No. 20 on The Billboard 200.
