Jackson Browne, Bonnie Raitt, the Wallflowers and Pete Yorn are among the artists filling out the forthcoming tribute album "Enjoy Every Sandwich: The Songs of Warren Zevon." As previously reported, the set also boasts contributions from Bruce Springsteen, Bob Dylan, the Pixies, Don Henley and Adam Sandler, and will be released Oct. 19 via Artemis.
Zevon died in September 2003 at 56, a little more than a year after being diagnosed with inoperable lung cancer.
"This record is a celebration of Warren Zevon's music," says Jorge Calderon, who co-executive produced the set with the subject's son, Jordan Zevon. "And Warren, being a true artist's artist, attracted some of the best folks in contemporary music thus making it a very special party."
Browne and Raitt, who will team up on the upcoming MoveOn PAC Vote for Change tour, paired to record "Poor Poor Pitiful Me," a 1978 top 40 hit for Linda Ronstadt. The Wallflowers will add a version of "Lawyers, Guns, & Money," while Springsteen contributes "My Ride's Here," recorded live last year in Toronto.
Jordan Zevon suggested the Pixies tackle "Ain't That Pretty at All" after meeting the band earlier this year. "The night of the Grammys, there was an Artemis Records party at McCabe's Guitar Shop in Santa Monica, [Calif.]," frontman Frank Black tells Billboard.com. "The Pixies all went down there. We got to be the cool post-punk band hanging out with the former Eagles and Jackson Browne."
The album also boasts songs by Steve Earle, David Lindley and Ry Cooder, Jill Sobule, Calderon and Jennifer Warnes, as well as a string arrangement of the song "Keep Me In Your Heart" by noted Beach Boys collaborator Van Dyke Parks.
Along with Jordan Zevon's version of "Studabaker," a second previously unreleased song written by Warren Zevon, "The Wind," is performed by actor-turned-singer Billy Bob Thornton. The latter track shares its name with Zevon's final studio album, which boasted appearances by Springsteen, Browne, Thornton and many others.
