To commemorate the 40th anniversary of the death of crooner Nat King Cole, Capitol/EMI is preparing the worldwide release of a new compilation and a documentary in several different packages. All created with the full cooperation of the artist's estate and all titled "The World of Nat King Cole," the CD and DVD sets will be simultaneously released Jan. 25 in the United States and a day earlier internationally.

The CD will feature 28 remastered Cole classics, from his 1944 multi-format hit "Straighten Up and Fly Right" to the posthumous 1992 "virtual duet" with daughter Natalie Cole of "Unforgettable." The U.S. version also boasts the original 1951 version of the latter song, as well such timeless hits as "(I Love You) For Sentimental Reasons," "Nature Boy," "Too Young," "A Blossom Fell" and "Mona Lisa."

International editions will sport track lists that reflect Cole's hits in various regions, as well as recordings he made in different languages (case-in-point: his 1964 single "L-O-V-E," a No. 17 Adult Contemporary hit in the United States, was recorded in Spanish, Italian, French, German and Japanese).

The DVD will boast the DoubleJab Productions documentary "The World of Nat King Cole," made by filmmakers Stuart Watts, Ian Hunt and Kari Lia. Plans to televise the film in the United States and the United Kingdom in February are already in place, with additional international broadcasts planned.

"The themes we explore in 'The World Of Nat King Cole' include Cole's celebrity during his lifetime and the universal, timeless appeal of his music, with a special focus on Nat's influential role within the Civil Rights movement in the United States," Lia says. "Nat King Cole was one of the first African Americans to break through major race barriers in the entertainment industry, and we found that to be an area of his life that has never been fully explored until now."

"The World Of Nat King Cole" will be released in separate CD and DVD packages, as well as a deluxe, limited edition CD/DVD set.

"This ambitious multimedia project explores the variety of ways Nat continues to inspire people around the world," the artist's daughter, Carole Cole, says. "After forty years, his incomparable influence sings across and between cultural and generational lines."
