Ed Sheeran's 'Thinking Out Loud' Becomes First Single to Spend Year in U.K. Top 40
Ed Sheeran has claimed another record. The British singer-songwriter’s track “Thinking Out Loud” (Asylum) has made history by spending a full year inside the U.K.’s Top 40.
The song is at No. 28 on this week’s chart, a full 52 weeks after it was released, notes the Official Charts Company.
Other works have enjoyed longer non-consecutive runs, including Frank Sinatra's "My Way," which completed 75 weeks inside the Top 40 between April 1969 and September 1971. And more recently, Pharrell Williams' "Happy" (49 consecutive weeks) and John Legend's "All Of Me" (44 consecutive weeks) got close to the full-year milestone. Though none have achieved Sheeran's latest feat.
“Thinking Out Loud” has already bagged the record for the longest climb to reach the top spot; the track took 19 weeks to scale the peak after bowing at No. 26, and now has combined sales and streams of 1.65 million.
Sheeran can also pat himself on the back for the success of his sophomore album X, which this week logs a full year inside the Official Albums Chart Top 10.
The album, which is currently at No. 5, enjoyed 12 non-consecutive weeks at the peak and has surpassed 2.23 million sales since its release. According to a recent report published by the OCC, it’s the fifth best-selling album of the decade.
Sheeran has been in a purple patch all year. He'll become the first-ever musician to perform an Australian and New Zealand stadium tour entirely solo when he heads Down Under this November. Closer to home, his busy live itinerary includes three sold-out shows at Wembley Stadium next month.
