Mexican singer/songwriter Julieta Venegas, who went from being an alternative niche artist to a major commercial success thanks to her 2003 album "Sí" (BMG), was the top winner at the third annual MTV Video Music Awards Latin America. The show was held last night (Oct. 21) at the Jackie Gleason Theater in Miami Beach.
Venegas took home three awards: artist of the year, best solo artist and best artist (Mexico). Mexican alternative band Café Tacuba and Maroon5 won two awards each. Café Tacuba picked up best alternative artist and video of the year for "Eres," directed by Rogelio Sikander, and Maroon5 was named best international rock artist and best international new artist.
Other VMALA winners were a potpourri of countries and styles. Prominent honors included Chile's La Ley for best rock artist; Spain's La Oreja de Van Gogh, best group or duo; and Alejandro Sanz, best pop artist.
Winners in all 18 categories were chosen by fans who cast votes via the Internet and cell phones. The awards aired live throughout Latin America on MTV Latin America and in the United States on MTV2 and MTV Español. The show will air Oct. 30 on MTV.
