A Perfect Circle

Means And 'Motive'

APCA Perfect Circle offers a pack of 10 covers and two new songs on "eMOTIVe" (Virgin), which bandleader Maynard James Keenan's describes as "a collection of songs about war, peace, love and greed."

In addition to John Lennon's "Imagine," Marvin Gaye's "What's Goin On" and Fear's "Let's Have a War," "eMOTIVe" includes renditions of songs by Joni Mitchell, Devo, Depeche Mode and Black Flag, as well as the original song "Passive."

The set opens with APC's take on "Annihilation" by short-lived, politically charged San Francisco punk act Crucifix and also features a take of Black Flag's snarling "Gimme Gimme Gimme."

Keenan and his bandmates also reinterpret Mitchell's "Fiddle and the Drum," an intimate, war-questioning cut from her 1969 masterpiece "Clouds"; the Nick Lowe-written, Elvis Costello-popularized "(What's So Funny 'Bout) Peace Love and Understanding"; and the Memphis Minnie blues classic "When the Levee Breaks," most famously covered by Led Zeppelin.
