Avril Lavigne, the Flaming Lips, Wilco and the Shins join the fun on the "SpongeBob SquarePants" soundtrack, due this week from Sire. Lavigne sings the theme song, while Wilco's "Just a Kid" features backing vocals by frontman Jeff Tweedy's son Spencer's band, the Blisters.
The Shins recorded the new song "They'll Soon Discover" for the soundtrack, while Ween chips in with "Ocean Man" from its 1997 Elektra album "The Mollusk." Never exactly known as a kid-friendly act, Motorhead nevertheless makes its presence felt with the track "You Better Swim."
"I decided I wanted to address some of the aspects of the plot of the film, but do it in such a way that you could hear the song and not feel like it was necessarily from the soundtrack of a movie," says the Shins' James Mercer. "I have a tendency to write with vague metaphors, but some of the stuff is pretty blatantly about SpongeBob. The music was stuff I had actually put together, at least the main part, a long time ago. I'd always struggled trying to turn it into a pop song and I think I needed something like this to make it work."
