Other multiple winners included hip-hop duo OutKast with three awards, and singer/songwriter Sheryl Crow and country rocker Toby Keith with two each.
Rapper Kanye West provided the evening's main backstage drama when he told reporters that he was "definitely robbed" of the prize for breakthrough new artist, which went instead to country star Gretchen Wilson. "I was the best new artist this year, so get that other bull out of here," said West.
Usher on the other hand, was in a better mood. "Oh man, this is one of the greatest things of my career," he said backstage. "I can't say it's the greatest because there's so much to look forward to, but I'm really happy with winning every category in which I was nominated."
Usher won for favorite male artist and favorite album in both the pop/rock and soul/R&B categories for his LaFace/Zomba album "Confessions." He lost the T-Mobile-sponsored "Text-In" award to Kenny Chesney.
"Confessions" has sold 6.6 million copies in the United States. Usher recently became the first artist in 34 years to reach the top of the Billboard Hot 100 singles chart four times in a calendar year.
OutKast won all three categories in which it was nominated: favorite rap/hip-hop album for "Speakerboxxx/The Love Below" (Arista) and favorite pop/rock and rap/hip-hop group.
Antwan "Big Boi" Patton, half of the superstar duo, said afterwards that OutKast hoped to have a new album out by June. He also revealed a desire to work with reclusive English singer Kate Bush. "We're tryin' to find her, but people say she's crazy," he said.
Crow won the prizes for favorite adult-contemporary artist and favorite female artist.
Keith said he was not surprised to win the prizes for favorite male artist and album in the country categories, because he always does well when awards are voted on by the fans. At awards shows voted by the music industry, "I don't do jack," he said.
American Music Awards winners are determined by a national poll of 20,000 people, with nominees drawn from retail sales and radio airplay data.
