X guitarist/vocalist John Doe has inked with independent label Yep Roc, which will on March 22 release his next album, "Forever." The 11-track set is Doe's first since "Dim Stars, Bright Sky," released in 2002 by iMusic. He's the latest veteran act to sign to Yep Roc, which this year alone has inked Bob Mould, Robyn Hitchcock, Dave Alvin, Paul Weller and Ken Stringfellow.
"Forever" finds Doe surrounded by such guests as Alvin and Grant Lee Phillips on "The Losing Kind." Phillips also sings on "Twin Brother," while Neko Case duets with Doe on "Hwy 5," a track co-written with X's Exene Cervenka. Throwing Muses mastermind Kristin Hersh guests on "Ready," a tribute to fallen musicians such as Elliott Smith and the Germs' Darby Crash.
Veteran guitarist Smokey Hormel appears on "There's a Black Horse," while Doe's daughter Veronica Jane makes her singing debut on "Mama Don't." The set was produced by Doe and Dave Way, who worked behind the boards on the artist's 2000 album with his band the John Doe Thing, "Freedom Is…"
Doe is expected to embark on a North American tour in support of "Forever" this spring.
