Composers Jóhann Jóhannsson, Sean Callery and Austin Wintory were honored by their peers Monday at ASCAP's 30th annual Film & Television Music Awards.

The three received the PRO's Composers' Choice Awards, chosen by its writer members through an online voting process, at ceremonies honoring the composers behind the top films at the box office, the most-performed television music and the top video game music of 2014.

Jóhannsson was honored for his score to The Theory of Everything; Callery, whose 2014 work included Bones, Elementary and Homeland, was named TV Composer of the Year; and Wintory received the first-ever Video Game Score of the Year for The Banner Saga.

ASCAP also honored one of its own: Nancy Knutsen, a 27-year veteran of ASCAP's Film & Television Music Department and former senior vp. Composer John Williams, who worked with Knutsen in Boston in the late 1970s while he was working on the Star Wars trilogy, presented the award, calling her "my favorite little Ewok."

Elliot Goldenthal received the ASCAP Founders Award from four-time Oscar-nominated director Michael Mann, his collaborator on Heat and Public Enemies.

Deborah Lurie received the ASCAP Shirley Walker Award, an award established last year to honor composers who have contributed to the diversity of film and television music. Paramount Music president Randy Spendlove and director Joe Nussbaum presented the award to Lurie.
"We need more aspiring women composers," Lurie said in a speech long on praise for ASCAP and Spendlove. "It's a great idea and not a political idea."

To entertain the group, Shawn Patterson performed his "Everything Is Awesome" from The LEGO Movie with vocalist Sammy Allen. The songwriting team of Dave Kushner, Curtis Stigers and Bob Thiele performed their theme to Sons of Anarchy.

Composers and songwriters honored in the Top Box Office Films category included Lorne Balfe (Penguins of Madagascar, Son of God), Joseph Bishara (Annabelle), Pedro Bromfman (RoboCop), Patrick Doyle (Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit), Sia Furler (Annie), Michael Giacchino (Dawn of the Planet of the Apes), Nick Glennie-Smith (Heaven Is for Real), Henry Jackman (Big Hero 6, Captain America: The Winter Soldier), Greg Kurstin (Annie), Nicholas Littlemore (Dumb and Dumber To), Dario Marianelli (The Boxtrolls), Peter Mayes (Dumb and Dumber To), Bret McKenzie (Muppets Most Wanted), Will Musser (God's Not Dead), John Paesano (The Maze Runner), Shawn Patterson (The LEGO Movie), Heitor Pereira (If I Stay), John Powell (How to Train YourDragon 2, Rio 2), Steven Price (Fury), Trent Reznor (Gone Girl), Gustavo Santaolalla (The Book of Life), Howard Shore (The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies), Stephen Sondheim (Into the Woods), Luke Steele (Dumb and Dumber To), Fernando Velázquez (Hercules), Nathaniel Walcott (The Fault in our Stars), Nathan Whitehead (The Purge: Anarchy), ASCAP President Paul Williams (The Book of Life) and Hans Zimmer (Interstellar, Son of God, The Amazing Spider-Man 2).
