As tipped here last fall, Cold will on Aug. 30 release its Lava debut, "A Different Kind of Pain. The group previously recorded for several Universal Music Group labels; its most recent album, 2003's "Year of the Spider," was issued by Flip/Geffen.
The disc reunites the band's with guitarist Matt Loughran, who was a member of the outfit in its pre-Cold days as Grundig. That Jacksonville, Fla.-based group first caught the ear of Limp Bizkit frontman Fred Durst, who engineered its signing to his Flip imprint. Loughran fills a revolving slot of past guitarists, including Terry Balsamo (now with Evanescence), Kelly Hayes and Eddie Rendini.
The band -- rounded out by bassist Jeremy Marshall and drummer Sam McCandless -- recorded the new album in Bearsville (N.Y.) Studios and Virginia's Studio Barbbarosa with producer Michael "Elvis" Baskette (Chevelle, Puddle Of Mudd).
First single "Happens All the Time" is already making inroads at U.S. radio, and debuts this week at No. 34 on Billboard Radio Monitor's Active Rock airplay chart and No. 36 on the Mainstream Rock list. Other titles on the set include "Back Home," "Another Pill," God's Song," "Ocean" and "A Different Kind of Pain."
"Making this record wasn't just about dealing with the darkness, it was a healing process," singer Scooter Ward reveals. "Everyone who was involved and everybody who was around us at the time was changed by this album."
"Year of the Spider" debuted at No. 3 on The Billboard 200 and has sold 533,000 copies in the United States, according to Nielsen SoundScan. The set included the single "Stupid Girl," co-written by Ward with Weezer's Rivers Cuomo, which peaked at No. 4 on the Mainstream Rock tally and No. 6 on Billboard's Modern Rock chart.
