Soundwave Fest Expands, Announces Line-Up With Faith No More, Slipknot & Soundgarden
Australia’s Soundwave, one of the biggest touring hard-rock festivals on the planet, will be even bigger next year.
In an announcement that took many observers by surprise, organizers have revealed the Soundwave 2015 program would be spread over two days, with a bill that features headliners Faith No More, Soundgarden (day 1), Slipknot and Slash (day 2). A statement from Soundwave’s promoters reads, “Holy Smokes! This means better value, better staging, better production, longer sets and minimised clashes.”
The annual trek will start in Adelaide (Feb. 21-22), then move on to Melbourne (Feb. 21-22), Sydney (Feb. 28-March 1) and wrap-up in Brisbane (Feb. 28-March 1). The event, which launched as a one-off date in Perth back in 2004, will not even visit Western Australia next year after the fest’s outspoken promoter AJ Maddah was unable to reach an agreement with local and state government.
Maddah has made a habit of drip-feeding the line-up in years past, a tactic that has generated near-maximum hype. Ahead of Wednesday’s announcement (local time), at least five of the lesser-billed bands were leaked, with Maddah confirming some names via his Twitter account. The full line-up, which includes Incubus, Lamb of God, Ministry, Gerard Way, Marilyn Manson, Fall Out Boy and Judas Priest, can be seen here. Homegrown acts are again peripheral, with the likes of Melbourne acts Ne Obliviscaris and Confession listed lower on the bill.
Maddah has more time in his day to focus on Soundwave now that the Big Day Out and Harvest have vanished from the calendar. As previously reported, BDO founder Ken West brought Maddah on board to help guide the 2014 edition of his struggling mega-fest. This year’s BDO racked up losses reported at about $10 million, and a decision was announced that the show wouldn’t go on in 2015. Owners C3 Presents have said “we will be back”. Maddah also cancelled his three-city Harvest Festival ahead of its third edition, and the status of his partnership on the Vans Warped tour of Australia is unclear.
The general ticket onsale for Soundwave 2015 starts Aug. 25, and a members pre-sale begins Aug. 22.
