This perhaps shouldn't come as much of a surprise, as NME reports, given Albarn has already written two operas: "Dr Dee: An English Opera" and "Monkey: Journey To The West." This, however, will have more mainstream appeal than that previous work.

Albarn told the Daily Star his new project did not start as a musical, he said, "It's funny for me to say, 'I'm writing a musical', but yes, that's what I'm doing next. … It's something I've always wanted to do, because musicals are great when they're done well. It started out with the same subject matter but was going to be a left-field, experimental opera. But it's lurched into a mainstream musical for families."

Albarn teased a possible return to the Gorillaz, saying, "I've found myself writing a lot of uptempo songs that sound like Gorillaz."
