The second track, and first single, released from Alt-J's sophomore album "This Is All Yours" is called "Left Hand Free," and unlike the previously issued "Hunger Of The Pine," the song does not feature a Miley Cyrus sample. If you can survive that bit of news, take a listen to "Left Hand Free" below:
Whereas "Hunger of the Pine" was all ethereal mood, "Left Hand Free" is straightforward Southern rock, with a swaggering guitar line and some drum rolls punctuating the second half of the track. The constant between the two disparate songs is Joe Newman's inscrutable croon, which bends and flips over onomatopoeic runs before letting its inner rock god shine on the anthemic chorus.
"Left Hand Free" charted at No. 1 on Billboard's Trending 140 chart at 10:40 AM on Monday morning (July 7). "Hunger of the Pine," which was released last month, reached the No. 1 position on the Billboard Twitter RealTime Chart the day it was released (June 18) and again on the following day.
"This Is All Yours" is due out on Sept. 22 through Canvasback/Infectious Music, and both released songs are available as instant downloads with a pre-order. The band's international tour supporting the follow-up to "An Awesome Wave" begins on Sept. 18 in Glasgow.
