Lorde, Bastille Lead Mid-Year SoundScan Rock Charts

Bastille's breakthrough hit 'Pompeii' perks up mid-year rock sales lists, while Lorde's 'Pure Heroine' is still red-hot.

At the mid-year mark, Lorde's "Pure Heroine" album and Bastille's "Pompeii" lead as 2014's top-selling rock album and rock digital song in the U.S., with 641,000 and 2.3 million sold respectively, according to Nielsen SoundScan.

"Pure Heroine" ranked at No. 1 on Top Rock Albums and No. 3 on the Billboard 200 charts dated October 19, 2013, with 129,000 first-week copies. The title has moved 1.3 million copies release-to-date. Lorde also holds two spots on the mid-year top-selling songs list: "Team" with 1.8 million and "Royals" with 1.3 million sold in 2014 so far.

SoundScan's mid-year point ended with the week ending June 29, 2014.

Coldplay claims the No. 2 spot on the best-selling rock albums list with "Ghost Stories," which has sold 589,000 copies year to date, the highest sales for a rock album released in 2014. On the chart dated June 7, "Ghost Stories" started at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 with 383,000 first week copies, the biggest sales week of the year.

"Pure Heroine" and "Ghost Stories" are the only two rock albums to sell over 500,000. By the mid-year point of 2013, four albums had surpassed 500,000 in sales: Mumford & Sons' "Babel" (884,000), Imagine Dragons' "Night Visions" (692,000), The Lumineers' "The Lumineers" (649,000) and fun.'s "Some Nights" (506,000).

Eight rock digital songs have sold over 1 million so far this year compared to nine at the six month mark of 2013. Bastille's "Pompeii" leads this year's pack by far with 2.3 million. The track entered the Hot Rock Songs chart dated May 25, 2013 and after 40 weeks, climbed to No. 1 in March where it held for 12 consecutive weeks. The track also peaked at No. 5 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart dated March 15, 2014. The track ranked at No. 1 on Alternative Songs airplay chart for four weeks beginning in October of 2013 before crossing over to reach No. 3 on the Pop Songs and No. 2 at Adult Pop Songs charts (known as Mainstream Top 40 and Adult Top 40, respectively, on billboard.biz).

Following Bastille, Passenger's "Let Her Go" has sold 1.8 million downloads year to date. Entering the chart back in March of 2013, the track climbed to No. 1 on the Hot Rock Songs chart dated January 25, 2014 where it held for the next five weeks. "Let Her Go" peaked at No. 5 on the Hot 100 on Feb 22, 2014.

Overall, rock digital song sales total 139.85 million compared to 165.69 million at the mid-year point in 2013, a 16 percent decline. Rock album similarly dropped from 52.27 million in 2013 to 45.91 million so far this year, a 12 percent drop-off.
