Will Ferrell and Red Hot Chili Peppers’ Chad Smith delved deep into their bags of tricks for the well-hyped “greatest drummer” face-off on the “Tonight Show.”
Ferrell and his counterpart turned up looking freakishly similar in Kiss “Destroyer” shirts, jeans and baseball caps turned backwards – like a rock ‘n’ roll version of the “Step Brothers.”
Jimmy Fallon was on hand to judge the “traditional drum-off,” explaining each competitor had four solos and the winner was the guy who “whacks, smacks and slaps the skins best.”
Smith pulled out the full repertoire of triplets and paradiddles, twirls and stick throws. Ferrell was always there with a verbal smack-down, or a comment of overblown pomposity. “That was cute,” dished Ferrell, “do you play for the Luke Warm Chili Peppers?”
The drum battle has been in the works since February when, during a Chad Smith Reddit AMA, Ferrell challenged Smith to a sticks-fight for fundraising. On the night, Will pounded the skins for www.cancerforcollege.org, while Chad worked his kit for www.littlekidsrock.org
For the big finale, Ferrell brought out his big weapon -- a cowbell. It was a hard act to beat. Well, at least Fallon thought so, as he declared Ferrell the winner.
Keep watching because the Chili Peppers later appear on stage for a surprise performance of the Blue Oyster Cult’s "Don't Fear the Reaper." Ferrell played along on his cowbell. Even his time-keeping is funny.
